The Saru (Cypress Tree): The vertical, leaf-like columns on the outer edges of the panel represent the Cypress tree. In Palestinian culture, the Cypress is a symbol of eternity, strength, and resilience. Because it stays green year-round and can live for centuries, it represents the enduring spirit of the people and their connection to the land.
The Ward (Flowers): The central vertical band features geometric floral patterns, often referred to as the "Hebron Rose" or the "Flower of Bethlehem." These symbolize beauty, fertility, and the celebration of life. They are a tribute to the wildflowers that cover the hills of the West Bank every spring.
The S-Pattern (Roads): The small zigzagging borders between the trees and flowers are known as the "Road" motifs. They represent the paths and journeys between villages, connecting different communities through the shared art of embroidery.
Directly sourced from Palestinian women artisans from Dheisheh Camp in Bethlehem, ensuring your purchase supports local craftsmanship and keeps traditional embroidery alive for future generations.
This bag is a handcrafted piece. To ensure the Tatreez embroidery and textile remain vibrant for years to come, please follow these care instructions:
Spot Cleaning (Recommended): For small marks on the fabric, use a soft, damp cloth with a tiny drop of mild detergent. Gently dab the area without rubbing the embroidered threads.
Gentle Hand Wash: If the bag requires a full clean, hand wash it in cold water only. Use a gentle detergent and avoid soaking the bag for more than 10 minutes.
Handle with Care: Be mindful of the hand-stitched threads. Avoid wearing the bag against sharp jewellery, zippers, or rough surfaces that could snag the embroidery.
Drying: Never tumble dry. Reshape the bag while damp and lay it flat to air dry in the shade. Keep it out of direct sunlight while drying to prevent the textile from fading.
Do Not Iron
Colour Preservation: When not in use, store the bag in a dust bag or a cool, dry place. Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight can cause the colours to fade over time.
Closures: If the zipper becomes stiff, you can run a tiny bit of beeswax or a graphite pencil along the teeth to keep it sliding smoothly.
Storage: Avoid Overstuffing it with too many items.
Artisan Tip: If you notice a tiny loose thread, do not pull it! Carefully snip it with small embroidery scissors or use a needle to tuck it back into the design.
