The Cypress & The Tents
A story of deep roots and an open door
This specific arrangement represents the two pillars of Palestinian life: the strength of the land and the warmth of the home.
The Saru (Cypress Forest): The two top rows of tall, multicoloured vertical columns are the Cypress trees. Because they are evergreen and stand tall against the wind, they are the ultimate symbol of resilience and eternity.
The Al-Khayma (The Tents): The large, intricate red geometric structures at the bottom are "The Tents." In Palestinian heritage, this is a symbol of hospitality and sanctuary. It represents the "open door" policy of the village—the idea that there is always a place for a guest.
The Hijab (Amulets of Protection): If you look inside the red "tents," you’ll see small, multicoloured diamond patterns. These are known as "Amulets" or "Hirz." Traditionally, these were stitched into items to protect the wearer from bad luck and to bring blessings and safety to the home.
This bag is directly sourced from Palestinian women artisans in Dheisheh Refugee Camp - Bethlehem, Palestine, ensuring your purchase supports local craftsmanship and keeps traditional embroidery alive for future generations.
This bag is a handcrafted piece. To ensure the Tatreez embroidery and textile remain vibrant for years to come, please follow these care instructions:
Spot Cleaning (Recommended): For small marks on the fabric, use a soft, damp cloth with a tiny drop of mild detergent. Gently dab the area without rubbing the embroidered threads.
Gentle Hand Wash: If the bag requires a full clean, hand wash it in cold water only. Use a gentle detergent and avoid soaking the bag for more than 10 minutes.
Handle with Care: Be mindful of the hand-stitched threads. Avoid wearing the bag against sharp jewellery, zippers, or rough surfaces that could snag the embroidery.
Drying: Never tumble dry. Reshape the bag while damp and lay it flat to air dry in the shade. Keep it out of direct sunlight while drying to prevent the textile from fading.
Do Not Iron
Colour Preservation: When not in use, store the bag in a dust bag or a cool, dry place. Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight can cause the colours to fade over time.
Closures: If the zipper becomes stiff, you can run a tiny bit of beeswax or a graphite pencil along the teeth to keep it sliding smoothly.
Storage: Avoid Overstuffing it with too many items.
Artisan Tip: If you notice a tiny loose thread, do not pull it! Carefully snip it with small embroidery scissors or use a needle to tuck it back into the design.
