The Heritage of the Qabbeh

The embroidered panel on this bag is a classic representation of the Bethlehem-style Qabbeh, known for its architectural symmetry and rich color palette:

  • Qamar (The Moon): The large central diamond is the Qamar, a signature symbol of the central and southern regions of Palestine, representing light and guidance.

  • Urf al-Deek (Cockscomb Vines): The symmetrical, curving floral flourishes at the top corners are known as the Cockscomb. These represent the flora of the Palestinian landscape and the deep-rooted connection to the land.

  • The Protective Base: The lower half of the panel features a dense grid of interlocking diamonds. These geometric patterns are traditionally viewed as protective amulets, intended to bring safety and blessings to the owner.

  • Traditional Palette: The motif is stitched in a timeless combination of crimson red and golden yellow, colours that have defined Palestinian embroidery for centuries.

This bag is directly sourced from Palestinian women artisans in Bethlehem - Palestine, ensuring your purchase supports local craftsmanship and keeps traditional embroidery alive for future generations.

Leather Hand-Embroidered Tatreez

To maintain the structure of the leather-style material and the vibrancy of the hand-stitched embroidery, please follow these specific care instructions.

1. Cleaning

  • Do Not Wash: Never submerge the bag in water or use a washing machine, as this will ruin the internal structure and the leather finish.

  • For the Leather-Style Body: Wipe gently with a soft, slightly damp cloth to remove dust or surface marks.

  • For the Embroidery: If the threaded area gets dirty, spot clean only that specific area using a soft cloth, cold water, and a tiny drop of mild detergent. Dab gently—do not scrub—to avoid fraying the threads.

2. Maintenance

  • Avoid Moisture: Keep the bag dry. If it gets wet from rain, pat it dry immediately with a clean towel and let it air dry away from direct heat sources (like radiators or hair dryers), which can warp the material.

  • Protect from Snags: Be careful with sharp objects, jewellery, or zippers that might catch on the embroidery loops. If a thread pulls loose, simply tuck it back in with a needle; never pull or cut it close to the knot.

3. Storage

  • Keep its Shape: When not in use, stuff the bag lightly with acid-free tissue paper or a soft cloth to prevent it from collapsing or creasing.

  • Avoid Direct Sun: Store in a cool, shaded place. Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight can fade the embroidery colours and make the leather-style material brittle over time.
