The Motif: Protection and Abundance
The embroidery on this wallet is composed of three specific elements rooted in rural heritage:
The Hajab (The Amulet): The central repeating Diamond shapes are the "Hajab" or Amulet motif. Historically, these geometric diamonds were stitched into garments and accessories to act as a symbol of protection and strength for the owner.
The Arish (The Grapevine): The small "S" shaped hooks and colourful vines that curve out from the diamonds represent the Grapevines of the Palestinian hills. They symbolise fertility, life, and the connection to the land.
Sinn el-Munshar (Saw-Tooth Border): The sharp, colourful zig-zag borders at the top and bottom are known as "Saw Teeth." This pattern represents the rugged mountains of the landscape and serves to frame the "Amulet" with a sense of stability and order.
This item is sourced directly from Palestine, bringing together the best of traditional heritage. The Tatreez is hand-embroidered by women artisans in Bethlehem, and the leather is expertly crafted in Hebron. Your purchase supports local craftsmanship and helps keep these historic traditions alive for future generations.
To ensure your wallet maintains its structure and the vibrancy of its hand-stitched motifs, please follow these guidelines:
1. Leather Maintenance
Avoid Water: Leather is a porous material. If the wallet gets wet, gently pat it dry immediately with a soft, lint-free cloth. Do not use a hairdryer or place it near a heater, as extreme heat can cause the leather to crack.
Conditioning: To keep the black leather supple and prevent scuffs, apply a small amount of neutral leather cream or wax every 4–6 months. Apply it only to the leather parts, avoiding the embroidery.
Cleaning: For daily dust or fingerprints, a dry microfiber cloth is all you need to restore the leather’s natural sheen.
2. Protecting the Tatreez (Embroidery)
Snag Prevention: Be mindful of sharp objects like keys, jewelry, or broken fingernails, which can snag the delicate hand-stitched threads.
Spot Cleaning the Threads: If the embroidery becomes soiled, use a Q-tip dipped in very cold water and a tiny drop of mild, clear detergent. Gently dab the area—never rub, as this will cause the threads to pill or fray.
Color Preservation: When not in use, store the wallet in its dust bag or a cool, dry place. Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight can cause the traditional crimson and violet dyes to fade over time.
3. Hardware & Closures
The Magnet: Keep the magnetic snap area free of debris or metallic dust to ensure a strong, secure close every time.
Internal Zipper: If the internal zipper becomes stiff, you can run a tiny bit of beeswax or a graphite pencil along the teeth to keep it sliding smoothly.
4. Storage
Avoid Overstuffing: While the wallet is spacious ($20\text{ cm} \times 12\text{ cm}$), overfilling it with too many coins or cards can stretch the leather and put tension on the embroidery panel, potentially distorting the "Amulet" motifs.
