The History
During the 1936 Arab Revolt against the British Mandate, the keffiyeh transitioned from a rural garment to a unifying symbol of resistance. When British authorities attempted to target rebels wearing it, Palestinians across all social classes adopted the keffiyeh to protect the fighters and conceal their identities.
Its status as an enduring emblem of the Palestinian struggle was further cemented during the First and Second Intifadas.
This Keffiyeh is directly sourced from local shops in the Old City of Jerusalem - Palestine. Your purchase supports local traders and helps preserve this iconic symbol of heritage and identity for future generations.
To preserve the weave and the tassels of your keffiyeh, we recommend the following:
Gentle Hand Wash: Wash in cold or lukewarm water using a mild detergent. Avoid aggressive scrubbing, as this can distort the geometric weave.
Protect the Hadab (Tassels): The hand-knotted tassels are the most delicate part. To avoid tangling, do not wring or twist the fabric.
Avoid the Machine: If you must use a washing machine, place the keffiyeh in a mesh laundry bag and use a "Delicate" or "Hand Wash" cycle.
Drying: Air dry only. Lay the keffiyeh flat on a towel to absorb excess moisture, then hang it or lay it flat on a drying rack. High heat from a dryer will shrink the cotton and cause the tassels to frizz.
Ironing: If the keffiyeh is wrinkled, use a steam iron on a medium setting. For best results, iron the fabric while it is still slightly damp.
Tassel Maintenance: If the tassels become messy after washing, gently comb them through with your fingers while they are damp.
Storage: Store your Keffiyeh folded in a dry place. Avoid hanging it by the tassels, as the weight of the fabric can pull them loose over time.
Perfume/Deodorant: Apply scents before putting on your Keffiyeh to avoid staining the fabric or attracting dust to the fibers.
